Career Development for Engineers and Scientists

Career Development for Engineers and Scientists

The Career Development of Engineers and Scientists (CDES) office, serving GCoE and MCEE students, launched in Fall 2024, focusing on leadership, campus and career connections, and workplace readiness.

This new office restructures key Gallogly Student Affairs Team (GSAT) programs, integrating leadership development (Jerry Holmes Leadership Program for Engineers and Scientists - JHLP, and Engineering Student Life), campus and career connections, and a new emphasis on career readiness. CDES will enhance existing programs while identifying and filling gaps to better prepare engineering and science students for professional success.

Our Focus: Leadership and Career Readiness

Leadership

Through JHLP’s pillar-based approach, students enhance their capabilities across five domains: personal development, interpersonal relationships, management and teamwork, leadership, and intercultural competence. JHLP provides a variety of leadership development opportunities including:

  • Distinguished Speaker days
  • Workshops
  • Engineering Leadership Certificate
  • Courses
  • Holmes Leadership Associates
  • Networking

Students can engage with JHLP at the level that fits their needs. Some attend stand-alone events, such as workshops and retreats. Others commit to a longer term, by pursuing the undergraduate Engineering Leadership Certificate, enrolling in courses, and/or participating as Holmes Leadership Associates.

CDES co-director Kim Wolfinbarger serves as director for the Jerry Holmes Leadership Program for Engineers and Scientists.

Career Readiness

We are committed to preparing students for success in the engineering workforce through leadership, professional development, and career readiness programming. These efforts support all engineering students—whether through involvement in student organizations, career fairs, or college-wide initiatives designed to build skills and confidence for the future.

Key Initiatives:

  • Engineering Student Life: Oversight of ~60 GCoE registered student organizations (RSOs)
  • Engineering Leaders Assembly: Leadership development series for RSO officers
  • Student Life Workshops: Interactive professional development opportunities for students to learn about and practice professional skills
  • First-Year Interest Groups: Entry-level community-building and professional development experiences
  • Engineering Career Fairs: Held each September and February, in partnership with the OU Career Center
  • Oklahoma Engineering Futures Career Fair
Launched March 6, 2025 – spotlighting future-focused career paths and industry innovations within Oklahoma and surrounding regions
  • GCoE Scholarship Program: Coordination of college-level scholarship awards and applications
  • GCoE Graduation Activities: Planning and implementation of commencement-related events
