Gabriel Cenker, Roy Patrick Galang, and Maximus Sasser, three senior meteorology students at the University of Oklahoma, were recently recognized by the American Meteorological Society with each receiving a scholarship.
Cenker, pictured to the left, received The Bob Glahn Endowed Scholarship in Statistical Meteorology. The scholarship is funded by the late Bob Glahn, who was involved in pioneering work in the development and implementation of statistical applications within the atmospheric sciences for more than 60 years. He wrote over 150 papers, many published in atmospheric sciences journals, and was instrumental in developing Model Output Statistics and computer worded forecasts, now used worldwide.
Roy Patrick Galang, pictured in the center, received the Naval Weather Service Association Scholarship. The Naval Weather Service Association is an organization of Naval officers, enlisted personnel, and civilians who have provided meteorological, oceanographic, and numerical prediction services to the U.S. Navy and other military services. In 2011, the NWSA transferred management of its scholarship fund to the AMS, ensuring the "Naval Weather Service Association Scholarship" will continue to be awarded annually for at least the next 10-15 years.
And lastly, Maximus Sasser, pictured to the right, received The Jay Fein Scholarship. The Jay Fein Scholarship honors a leader in the atmospheric sciences whose calm presence, scientific insights, and administrative skills advanced meteorological and climate science. As a program director at the National Science Foundation, Jay Fein was known for his excellent judgment in supporting high-risk projects with significant potential impact and for his dedication to mentoring scientists of all ages.
