Chapter 4  WebStudy  Distance Learning on the World Wide Web
Internet Navigator...  A Simplified Guide to Netscape GOLD

Downloading Files

You can Download "many things" from the Internet..., and in fact you will be REQUIRED by WebStudy to Download numerous "things" until it becomes "second nature".

Go To:  http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Download_Location/

This time..., try using your Right Mouse Button..., as you "click-on" the Link (above).
Right Mouse Button Pop-up Window

Choose Open Link in New Browser Window.

Now you have two Netscape Browser Windows open

To "look at" the file (to actually see what is in banner.gif...,)
From the Browser Window (at this location...,)  http://www.occe.ou.edu/WebStudy/Download_Location/
Left Mouse "click-on"
the filename banner.gif.
Netscape will load the GIF Image to the Browser Window.

To return to the http: Location..., use your Netscape Back Button (Netscape Toolbar).

To Save the File  banner.gif  to your machine...,

From the Netscape Browser Toolbar..., Choose File, then Save As.

File Save As Menu

The Save As Window will "pop-up"..,.

Save As Window banner.gif Image

Choose Save..., to save the File to Your Machine!

Again..., Remember where (in your machine) you put the file!

FYI  ...here is the image banner.gif
The TEST FILE banner.gif

Remember not all files are viewable in the Netscape Browser Window.

An Alternate Method to Download the file  banner.gif

Don't be confused if you can't see the banner.gif file "right away"  (Eventually, There will be hundreds of files at this location...,) just scroll down until you see banner.gif
Download Location http example

Go To the http: location above, and..., (while you "hold down" the "Keyboard" Shift Key).
"Left Mouse click-on" the file:  banner.gif
Click-on banner.gif Image

The Save As Window will pop-up, and you can rename the file and save it to a location (you specify) in your machine. (Put the file in a folder where you can find it again)
Save As Window for banner.gif Image

Change the name of the file from banner.gif to something like  yourname.gif
This avoids the problem of 100 students all trying to Upload the "same filename" to the same location.

If the file already exists in your machine...,
Existing File Warning form Save As Window

Say NO..., When the Save As Window "comes back"..., change the filename to something unique!

If you have trouble with these tasks..., please ask someone! It is essential you learn to Download. (both methods!)
If any of this is unclear..., please ask someone. don't wait!

A Reminder for the beginner students..., the above http: Address and the ftp: address below are the "same location". You can Download from either, and you should learn to Download from both the ftp: and a http: locations!

The difference being..., you can Download from both ftp: and http:, but you can only Upload to ftp: locations.

Don't let the ftp: Location Name "fool" you!  This location could be named "the_X_file"..., it is just a "Named" Location. Think of "this place" as just one of millions of ftp: location on the Internet that has information that "you need". This ftp: location and the companion WebStudy_Upload Page (next) are "places" for you to experiment!
