The Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award is presented to an outstanding International and Area Studies (IAS) graduate every spring semester. The Award recognizes an IAS student that has demonstrated high academic achievement, a commitment to public service and a desire to pursue a career in global affairs. The recipient will receive a cash award and recognition at the IAS convocation.
To be eligible for the Admiral Crowe Award, you must be a senior graduating in May with a GPA of 3.75 or higher who exhibits dedication to international awareness and action. The Award recognizes student achievement beyond academic excellence: it celebrates students who distinguish themselves in terms of character, leadership, and outstanding contribution to the world around them. Admiral Crowe is remembered not only because he held prestigious positions and contributed much to our country, but because of the life that he lived and the kind of person he was. The Admiral Crowe Award honors the IAS graduate that similarly exhibits such outstanding qualities.
Background:
Admiral Crowe spent his formative years in Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma before finishing his college degree at the US Naval Academy. He would later receive a PhD in International Relations from Princeton University. In a career spanning half a century, Admiral Crowe served his country as a naval officer, scholar and diplomat. He worked with both Republican and Democratic presidents as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. His keen military and diplomatic skills led many to describe Admiral Crowe as "the most powerful peacetime military officer in American history."
Known as an independent thinker, Admiral Crowe was appreciated for his sharp and insightful analysis of geopolitical relations. He was also known for his support for the University of Oklahoma, having taught classes at OU on several occasions and having served as the first chair of the International Programs Center Board of Visitors. His friends and colleagues honored Admiral Crowe’s service to OU by creating the William J. Crowe Jr. Chair in Geopolitics, which is held by the Dean of the College of International Studies and Vice Provost of International Programs.
