OU Big Idea Challenge Funds CIS Faculty Research Project Focused on Latin America
Two CIS faculty members are among the recipients of OU's "Big Idea Challenge 2.0," a program facilitated by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships and designed to foster cross-disciplinary research projects. The projects selected for this year's challenge are focused on solving major worldwide challenges and are expected to attract substantial external funding in the future.
The project involving CIS faculty is titled “Climate Information and Actionable Timescales for Climate Security in Latin America." It is led by Kathy Pegion, an associate professor and Williams Chair in the OU School of Meteorology, with co-principal investigators Fabio de Sa e Silva, Associate Professor of International Studies and Wick Cary Professor of Brazilian Studies in CIS, and Rachel Schwartz, Assistant Professor of International & Area Studies in CIS.
Center for Brazil Studies Co-Director Fabio de Sa e Silva Co-Edits New Book

Fabio de Sa e Silva, Associate Professor of International Studies, Wick Cary Professor of Brazilian Studies and Co-Director of the Center for Brazil Studies, has co-edited a new book published with FGV Press in Brazil, titled Rule of Law and Authoritarian Populism: Institutional Erosion and Resistance in Brazil (2018–2022). The book includes 13 chapters by 23 authors based in three countries (Brazil, Canada and the U.S.). Contributors examine the fate of institutions, law and democracy in Brazil under former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The Center for Brazil Studies hosts events on the University of Oklahoma's campus that gather members of the community who are passionate about topics related to Brazil.

On February 26, March 5 and March 12, 2021, the Department of International and Area Studies in the David L. Boren College of International Studies held its annual symposium with the them of "The Environment, Human Rights, and Democracy in Bolsonaro’s Brazil."
The symposium included plenary sessions with notable keynote speakers, and workshop sessions to discuss academic papers selected in 2020.

On February 9, 2023, the OU Center for Brazil Studies co-sponsored a Latin American Lunch panel discussion, "Recent Political Protests in Peru and Brazil." Speakers included Víctor Maqque (LASI and History), Fabio Costa Morais de Sa e Silva (International and Area Studies), Michelle Morais de Sa e Silva (International and Area Studies) and Charlie Kenney (Political Science).
