Herman Curiel served as Professor at the Anne & Henry Zarrow School of Social Work since 1981 and Adjunct Professor (1999- present) in the Department of Geriatric Medicine, Health Science Center, College of Medicine, University of Oklahoma. From 2000- 2006 he was coPrincipal Investigator to a US Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) SPNS Project titled: US/Mexico Border Health Evaluation Center based at the University of Oklahoma. Two of his books are based on his work with the SPNS Project. His publications focus on issues related to aging, education, health and HIV/AIDS affecting the Hispanic/ Latino population. In 2005 the Anne & Henry Zarrow School of Social Work’s Board of Visitors named him “Social Work Educator.” In 2011, the National Association of Social Workers’ Foundation recognized him as a, “Social Work Pioneer.” He has served on numerous community boards and NASW committees locally and nationally. He served on the editorial board for Journal of Social Work, as consulting editor for Journal of Social Work Education and currently the Journal of HIV/AIDS & Social Services. Dr. Curiel began his academic career at the University of Houston in 1972, where he held a joint appointment at Baylor College of Medicine, Departments of Psychiatry & Community Medicine from 1977 to 1981 before beginning his career at the University of Oklahoma.
