Dr. James C. Ricker started in the public history field in 1993 as an Archaeological Field Technician/Crew Member on cultural resource management projects in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Georgia. Duties in these positions included archaeological field survey, excavation, and lab analysis. In 1997, he began work as an Archaeological Curator/Field Archaeologist with the Institute of the Great Plains at the Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton, Oklahoma. There, he conducted cultural resource management (CRM) archaeological field projects, wrote subsequent report recommendations pertaining to Section 106 compliance, curated archaeological collections, designed and maintained the Institute’s web site, and wrote successful museum grant proposals. From 2001-2003, Dr. Ricker was the Curator of Collections with the Oklahoma Historical Society at the Guthrie Museum Complex, Guthrie, Oklahoma including the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, the Oklahoma Publishing Museum, and the Carnegie Library.
It was also in 2001 that he started his own CRM company as chief project coordinator for hundreds of archaeological/historical surveys throughout Oklahoma. Duties in this capacity included pre-field research, field surveys, test excavations, and report writing with recommendations to the State Archaeologist pertaining to compliance with Section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act.
