The University of Oklahoma, School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) internships provide unique opportunities for students to gain real-world experiences that build on course concepts and overall program goals. Completing an internship can be a valuable step towards building a successful career. Students apply what they are learning in class to practical situations with hands-on learning that strengthens their skills and helps prepare them for the reality of the workplace.
The internship objectives include:
To give the student an opportunity to apply the principles and theories of Information Science in a working environment by interacting with members in an information science community.
To enable the student to supplement knowledge in his/her area of specialization through hands-on experience and applying principles of the field in information science center, community-based contexts.
In addition to developing skills, internships offer students the chance to build a professional network. Meeting people in their field can open doors to future job opportunities and valuable mentorship. Internships also help students gain confidence by allowing them to navigate real work environments and tackle real challenges!
Another important benefit of internships is career exploration. Students often discover what they truly enjoy—or what they do not—through firsthand experience. This insight can guide them in making smarter career decisions. Future employers appreciate the invaluable experience of students having internship experience on a résumé because it makes a student stand out, showing that they are motivated, experienced, and ready to contribute.
The Internship provides an opportunity for students to synthesize principles and theories under professional supervision. One student shared:
The placement supervisor provided exceptional guidance throughout the internship. They offered opportunities for hands-on work with the collection and encouraged me to take ownership of projects. Their trust in my abilities to design exhibits, train volunteers, and propose solutions for archival challenges fostered both my confidence and skill development. They were always approachable and ensured I had the resources and support needed to succeed. SLIS Internship Student, Fall 2024
