Dr. Shortle is a Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of Oklahoma. Her research examines the role of group identity in American political behavior, with a particular focus on religion, race, and belonging in democratic life. She frequently collaborates with organizations seeking to strengthen the civic engagement and enhance the social, economic, and democratic health of their communities.
Dr. Shortle is the co-author of The Everyday Crusade: Christian Nationalism in American Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2022), with Eric McDaniel and Irfan Nooruddin. The book was recognized as a Choice Outstanding Title in 2023.
She served as a Public Fellow with the Public Religion Research Institute from 2023 to 2025 and is currently a Non-Resident Fellow at the Pulaski Institution, Research Fellow with the Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges, and co-Principal Investigator of the Rural Talent Lab project.
Dr. Shortle’s research and public scholarship have been featured by national and international media outlets, including CNN, France 24, ABC Australia, Al Jazeera English, the Hill, McCleans, Newsweek, the Conversation, Miami Herald, and PBS, as well as Oklahoma-based outlets such as KGOU, KOSU, KOCO, NonDoc, and The Oklahoman.
