Encourage students to engage in course materials by tying them to assessments, placing them in Canvas assignments, or linking to them from an assignment. After students have viewed a lecture, video, reading, etc. they can immediately respond by completing a discussion, worksheet, quiz, short assignment, etc.
Students are much more likely to read a text, watch a video, or complete a learning activity if they know they will be assessed on the learning content.
The more that content is paired with assessments (and learning outcomes), the more students will engage and find it meaningful.
