Graded Checkpoints in Discussions

Graded Checkpoints is a new feature in Canvas Discussions that allows instructors to create multiple due dates within a discussion and assign separate point values for both initial posts and replies. By separating deadlines and grading components, instructors can provide clearer expectations, encourage timely participation, and support more meaningful peer interaction.

How it Works

Set Up

Instructors can select Graded Checkpoints as an option in a graded discussion (the Graded setting must be enabled). When selected, instructors can define:

• Points Possible for initial post
• Points Possible for replies to other students
• The number of required replies
• Due dates for the student's initial post and subsequent replies.

Student View

Both due dates appear on students' Canvas To Do lists and calendars, helping them stay on track and engage throughout the discussion period.

Grading

In SpeedGrader, instructors can evaluate initial posts and replies separately. The Gradebook then displays a single combined score for the discussion.

Why Use Graded Checkpoints?

• Provides clarity: Students can clearly see what is expected and when each part of the discussion is due.
• Keeps students on track: Requiring an initial post before replies encourages students to engage earlier rather than waiting until the deadline.
• Promotes meaningful interaction: When students post earlier, classmates have more opportunities to read and respond, creating richer discussion and greater peer-to-peer engagement.
• Simplifies grading: Instructors can assess initial posts and responses separately while maintaining a single discussion grade in the Gradebook.
