Announcements

Announcements are an effective way to communicate with students, maintain instructor presence, and re-engage learners throughout the semester. In online courses, pedagogically meaningful announcements can also support Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) when they include instructional content rather than just administrative reminders.

Use announcements to:

  • Welcome students to the course or a new module.
  • Remind students about upcoming coursework and deadlines.
  • Share a course-related video or resource.
  • Post instructor-created videos that explain concepts or assignments.
  • Connect course content to current events or news.
  • Celebrate student achievements and milestones.

A simple approach is to structure announcements around three elements:

  • Teach: Highlight a key concept, address a common misconception, or connect ideas across the course.
  • Remind: Reinforce important deadlines, expectations, or upcoming activities.
  • Invite: Encourage questions, discussion, or office hour participation.

Best Practices

  • Post announcements on a consistent schedule so students know when to expect them.
  • Communicate your announcement schedule in the syllabus or course orientation materials.
  • Encourage students to enable Canvas notifications and check announcements regularly.
  • Include a brief instructional message alongside housekeeping items (to meet RSI).
  • Invite questions and allow student replies to announcements to promote interaction and communication.

Well-crafted announcements do more than share information; they create connection, support learning, and reinforce your presence in the online classroom.
