Human relations is a multidisciplinary field of study that combines organizational studies, and theories of many social sciences with the world of work and service.

The department hosts several events each semester to deliberate on social issues, engage with the community, and demonstrate the tenants of human relations.

Social Activism Through Visual Art:

The Human Relations department at The University of Oklahoma hosted Katrien Heere, Former Dutch marketing and communication manager turned social activist, utilizing the visual arts to tell the story of the history of South Africa and the current conditions, post-apartheid, to promote understanding and healing. During Katrien time in Oklahoma she spoke in Dr.Long’s Intro to Human Relations course regarding her time in South Africa, students traveling to visit for study abroad, and the rich history of South Africa. Thursday, September 28th, 6-8pm Meacham Auditorium, Oklahoma Memorial Union, free food, and beverages were provided. To hear Katrien speak, this time in more detail of her personal life and experiences. The United States of America and South Africa have different geographical locations and many differences, but they also share similar origins and histories. Both countries have diverse populations and were founded by colonists who implemented slavery. In the 20th century, both nations discriminated against non-white citizens, with South Africa implementing Apartheid and the US implementing Jim Crow laws. Be on the look for Human Relations Study Abroad opportunities coming up in the Spring/ Summer academic term where they will be traveling to Brazil, Spain, and South Africa. Dr. Brenda Lloyd-Jones Lifetime Achievement Award

Brenda Lloyd-Jones, Ph D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Relations, recived the esteemed 2023 Women of Color Lifetime Achievement Award. This distinction pays heartfelt tribute to her remarkable achievements, not only in academia, but also for her outstanding contributins to the Tulsa community. Her vision, commitment, and tireless dedication have earned her the reputation of an exemplary agent of chnage. Dr.Llyod-Jones, the visionary founder of The Mothers Group, Inc., a local nonprofit organization committed to advancing reading literacy and nurturing cultural development among under-resourced childern, embodies the spirit of positive change. Her transformative contributions extend far beyond Tulsa, impacting the state and even resonating nationally. The award cermony and lucheon are a central part of the annual Women of Color Tulsa Expo, which honors and celebrates the exceptional accompliments of African American women. Dr. Brenda Llyod- Jones stands as a shinning example of excellence and empowerment. Morris Chestnut, the celebrated actor, was the keynote speaker this year. 



Factors of Global Immigration

On November 10, 2022, the Department of Human Relations presented our second rendition of the "HR Chat" series!

Panelists discussed the economic, ethical, legal, and social perspectives of global immigration.  The goal of the panel was to encourage a respectful, scholarly discussion among peers so that we each learn from one another as we navigate historical changes climate, politics and more.

Dobbs v. Jackson Panel Discussion

On September 20, the Department of Human Relations hosted our first panel discussion!

This semester's HR Chat series strives to survey experts in various fields to unpack the intricate elements of difficult conversations and share different perspectives.

Former Norman Mayor, Breea Clark, moderated the panel and our distinguished panelists answered numerous questions about Oklahoma public policy. They provided clarity on the impacts of the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling and the recent passing of state bills. Each expert also gave their input on the trajectory of this issue as it affects Oklahomans.
