Ellen Greene is a Joseph Paxton Presidential Professor of Classics at the University of Oklahoma. She received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1992. Her research specialization is Greek and Roman lyric poetry, with an emphasis on issues in gender and sexuality. Her published books include: Reading Sappho: Contemporary Approaches (1997), Re-Reading Sappho: Reception and Transmission (1997), The Erotics of Domination: Male Desire and the Mistress in Latin Poetry (1999), Women Poets in Ancient Greece and Rome (2005), Gendered Dynamics in Latin Love Poetry (with Ronnie Ancona) (2005), The New Sappho on Old Age (with Marilyn Skinner) (2009). Professor Greene has also published numerous articles on Greek and Latin love lyric. With Tara Welch, she is co-editing Oxford Readings in Propertius. She is also currently working on a book-length study of Sappho for Blackwell.
Professor Greene teaches upper-division language courses that include: Virgil, Horace, Catullus, Roman Elegy, Homer, and Archaic Greek Lyric Poets. She also teaches a range of Classical Culture courses such as: Gender and Sexuality in Greece and Rome, Ancient Epic, Greek Tragedy, and Visions of Heaven and Hell: Virgil and Dante.
