Vision of the BeaconOU
We continue to print the BeaconOU and have campus showings of spiritually educating films which are listed on the homepage. We have added a Christian OU alumni page. This will give Christian OU alumni an opportunity to share their experience in the "real world" with the current students on campus. There is a job posting board and links to other campus ministries' web-sites. 1 Timothy 6:18 "Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." Hebrews 13:16 "And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased". When you graduate and get a "real job", remember to help others by informing them of job openings and supporting the ministries on campus in order for the Gospel to continue to be spread on this campus.
HOW THE BEACON BEGAN:
The Beacon was a student newspaper with a Christian perspective and a small student writing staff. It was financed and distributed on the OU campus by an individual student, Michael Bratcher. The last issue was printed the Spring semester of 2000. At that time, Michael graduated and tried to pass on the torch to other students. Due to the lack of a leader, time constraints of writers, and no money, the Beacon was not continued.
As of the Fall 2002 semester, I have started the BeaconOU, which is similar to the old Beacon format. After publishing the BeaconOU for four semesters, I know that it takes a lot of time to publish a great student newspaper with articles and news from or with a Christian perspective. But, I also know that it is worth every minute and dollar that has been and will be invested in it. I am amazed at the number of students who have given their time in writing articles and volunteering. Our commitment is to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and have four issues of the BeaconOU per semester that will educate students and faculty of how Christianity fits within the world we live. We are an "Independent Student Publication" with a vision of unity among followers of Jesus Christ much like the yearly Jesus Week Resurrection celebration. Some of you have met me before or volunteered with me during the yearly Jesus Week events.
The last year that the old Beacon was printed was my first year here. I remember sitting in a study hall with some physics tutors discussing the articles that they were reading in the Beacon. Some people may never want to talk about Jesus with someone else one on one. They may feel threatened. A newspaper that shines the love of God is not threatening. They can read as much as they like and lay it down whenever they feel like it. But, I believe when they start to read a newspaper full of the Word, it will accomplish what God intends for it to do in their lives. Isaiah 55:9-11: vs. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. vs. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, vs. 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Brothers and Sisters, be in prayer about the students of OU. Your help is much appreciated in prayer and financial support.
