School of Meteorology IT staff provide technology services to all the members of the School of Meteorology community.
You can request technical support multiple ways:
For more information on any of the services listed below, please send an email to metit@ou.edu for assistance.
SOM uses a separate account system to access the iMacs and Linux computers available on the 5th floor of the National Weather Center. To request an account please click here and log in with your OU email and password. Accounts are created as requests are received.
The National Weather Center has two methods of remote access:
How do I log onto a computer at the NWC remotely?
You can log onto a computer one of two ways. Either use the NWC VPN (Virtual Private Network) software or the NWC Bastion Host. Both of these services are run and maintained by the NWC Network Operations Center (NOC) which is a subgroup of OUIT.
How do I get a baston Host/ Starbuck account?
First you will need to fill out a request form for the account. The account will be set up and will use your OU 4×4 as the username and login password. Accounts for undergrad students are disabled at the end of academic terms and will need to be renewed.
How do I use the Bastion Host?
To login to the bastion host you will need to do the following from an ssh terminal, such as secure shell, putty, or the mac terminal, iterm or x11 term.
Then your password is your 4×4 password that you use for the University system, such as enroll.ou.edu, or OU-email.
Once logged in you will be able to ssh to any computer you have access to in the NWC network. If you are wanting to work on one of the linux lab computers you would want to do a command like the following,
The password is your SoM computing account password. For those computers in the linux lab, they are named somclass and then a number from 01 to 24, and you can choose any of them. (i.e., somclass20, somclass08, somclass13, etc., all numbers are two digits.) Also, make sure you don’t use the brackets!! That is just the computer way of saying you need to input this information here without the carat! That should be it, and you should be ready to go. If you are wanting to use the X-windows you will need to make sure that you tunnel an xterm through by using the –Y option after ssh, such as
How do I use the VPN?
In order to access and use the VPN you must download and install the software. There is no signup for the VPN . For step by step directions please follow the directions for Mac here or Windows here.

Does the department have personal web space available?
Simple answer: Yes.
So how do I go about accessing my personal web space?
When a new account is created for a School of Meteorology user, a directory on the web hosting machine is created. It is then linked to the user home directory of the user and is accessible on any of the Linux lab and Apple lab machines local in the NWC.
Users can access their web space remotely by connection to machines in the Linux Lab. In each user account, there is a directory named http. Placing html and php files in this directory and any subsequent sub folder will allow web access to those files.
How to I make a simple html page?
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a switched language. That means you turn features on and off using a switch. An example of a basic html file is as follows:
This will produce a simple webpage that has a title for the browser and a simple text line of welcome.
What is the URL for accessing my personal web space?
The URL for any individual user is as follows:http://weather.ou.edu/~[usesrname] where username is your assigned login name (without the brackets) given to you when you got your account. Remember that the tilda (~) in front of the username is important.
OK, I have put a few files there and I still do not see my website. What’s up with that?
Well, in order for a file to be seen, one of two things need to true:
AGS Computing Services has poster printers in both the NWC and SEC which print full color glossy posters up to 42″ in width and “unlimited” length. PDF documents are preferred as there can be discrepancies in the document layout with Powerpoint and Illustrator. You can charge it to a department account, or we accept exact cash or check. The price is $8/ft for A&GS personnel and $12/ft for non-A&GS personnel. Please submit your poster request at least two business-days in advance (but preferably one week in advance) by filling out the the poster print request form.
Please use this form in order to request a slide on the digital screens. If you would like to create your own slide to fit our screens, please make a JPG or PNG file that is 1920 x 1000 pixels. For the best quality, we suggest that you include nice graphics and contrasting colors. Use large, readable fonts and keep your text to a minimum. The quality may affect our ability to use your slide. Slides published at the discretion of the A&GS/NWC PR and Marketing team.

The National Weather Center (NWC) Library began operating in 2006 when the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) Library was merged with OU's School of Meteorology Library. The NWC Library supports the research, education, outreach, and operations of all NWC entities, and offer research services to anyone in the general public with an interest in weather or geography. The collection contains over 7,000 materials covering subjects including:
The library is also home to unique government documents, historical weather maps, and rare field sketchbooks of tornadoes from the 1800s. As the library is a joint venture of the University of Oklahoma and NOAA, it facilitates access to both educational and federal resources.
