The Advising Process

Academic advising is a collaborative process between students and advisors designed to help students achieve their educational, career, and personal goals. It involves guidance and support for navigating academic requirements, making informed decisions about courses and programs, and addressing challenges that may arise during a student’s educational journey.

Advising Appointment Information

Schedule your appointment

All students will need to be advised every semester before they can enroll.

Before your advising appointment

Self-reflect on your current academic progress and create future goals for yourself. Go to Degree Navigator at degree.ou.edu to check your degree completion progress and prepare a trial schedule for the upcoming academic term.

During your advising appointment

You and your academic advisor will have a conversation about your current academic status, your goals, and how to achieve those goals. You will be given a suggestion of courses to take for the upcoming semester and discuss enrollment dates.

After your appointment

Your academic advisor will lift your advising hold and send you a summary of the visit.

Student Resources

Add: Students may add during the first week of classes for a 16-week course (Fall and Spring full semester course) without the instructor's approval. Beginning the second week of classes for a 16-week course, students must have approval from the instructor to add a course.

Drop: Students may drop with 100% refund and no record on the transcript through the end of the second week for a 16-week course on one.ou.edu. No grades will be recorded for dropped courses.

Beginning with the third week, online add/drop is not available; students must contact their advisor to add and drop courses.

Third through twelfth week of a 16-week course. (Second through the sixth week for an 8-week course.) Students may add classes only with permission of the instructor of the course and the college-level academic advisor, Brittney Johnson. Courses dropped during this time will be recorded with a grade of W. (All undergraduate colleges require their students to obtain approval from their advisor to drop a course during Period II.)

Click here for more information about adding or dropping a class!

A student is allowed only five grades of W throughout the course of their undergraduate career at The University of Oklahoma. Once a student reaches this maximum number of W grades, they will not be allowed to drop any courses after the free add-and-drop period. After the five-drop limit has been reached, students with extreme, extenuating circumstances may apply for an exception to the limit on W grades through the Academic Advising Resource Center (AARC). Ws for Fall 2020 and Fall 2021 do not count toward the five W limit. Complete withdrawals also do not count in this limit.

Thirteenth week through the end of classes for a 16-week course. (Seventh week through the end of classes for an 8-week course.) Permission from the instructor and the college-level academic advisor, Brittney Johnson is required for adding classes. Students who wish to drop a course during this period must petition the college level academic advisor, Brittney Johnson (Instructor’s Signature and a grade of W or F is required).

First three weeks of a 16-week semester

Dropping all of your classes after the semester begins is known as a complete withdrawal. Starting on the first day of classes and running through the Friday of the third week, the petition below should be submitted and will be coordinated by Graduation and Persistence Support. During the first two weeks of the semester, a fully processed complete withdrawal is guaranteed a 100% credit of all tuition and fee charges.

Fourth-Sixteenth week of the semester

Starting in the fourth week of the semester you will submit a Complete Withdrawal Petition with your current academic college to remove all courses. Please contact the college level academic advisor, Karin Hickenbotham, at karin.h@ou.edu.

Full-time undergraduate students who are charged the flat rate and take fewer than 15 hours per semester may be able to bank hours to use in the summer. The hours a student has banked will automatically be used to reduce summer charges for tuition and mandatory hourly fees. Banked hours cannot be converted into cash or held for a future academic year.

Students who are unable to enroll in 15 credit hours may appeal for an exemption to the flat rate. Please email the college-level academic advisor Karin Hickenbotham at karin.h@ou.edu to begin the appeal process.

Students will need to petition for an overload request if they wish to take more than 19 credit hours for the fall and spring semesters or more than 9 credit hours for the summer. Please email the college level academic advisor Karin Hickenbotham at karin.h@ou.edu to begin the overload petition process.

If you need permission to enroll in a major specific course, please contact your assigned academic advisor for a course override.
