Do you have advice for prospective students who are interested in attending or applying to OU?

Ask the questions you want answers to. It is never too early or too late to connect with current OU students and if you want to meet a current student, let us know! You don’t have to do this alone. We want you and your loved ones to be a part of your college search journey! Our admissions counselors and staff across campus are here to support you one-on-one throughout this entire process. Additionally, once here as a student, you can lean on your resources. There's advising, mentors, Moneycoaches, and even free tutoring at OU. All these resources are here to help you be even more successful.

In your opinion, what are some of the most significant contributions Latine students have made to OU's vibrant campus life and academic environment?

By bringing our communities to campus and having such a melting pot of students, our campus looks like what life looks like once we graduate. To me, that is special and it is not something that happens without intention. I get chills reflecting on what OU is. For me and my community, it is a place where we break barriers, we push through ceilings, and are so culturally prideful of what OU brings to the table. Just by looking at our incoming freshman class of this year, one in four are first generation, and one in three are from an underrepresented community. Our campus just continues growing in success academically, professionally, and socially, and the pride it brings is exactly what we mean when we say Sooner Magic!

How can the OU community celebrate and support Hispanic Heritage Month?

They can celebrate and support the Latine community by being open to embracing what makes our school, state, and country so beautiful — diversity. It is all about taking the time to educate ourselves, to be better every day, and to care for one another regardless of how much we might have in common. The OU Family is special because of what we bring to the table. I truly believe there is "Only One Oklahoma", and that is showcased on campus and in our every day lives by being welcoming, inclusive, and not tolerating anything that hurts any part of the OU Family.

What challenges do Latine students encounter during their college search journey?

There is a handful of different challenges students face, from confusion about the process, fears of applying, cost, to moving away from home. One I have focused on is addressing a lack of understanding of what higher education is and means. Our cultures are so diverse, but one thing we often share is the lack of understanding of higher-ed and making decisions based on information that may no longer be accurate.

Our students are more than capable in being in these spaces. By having genuine conversations with our prospective students and their support system, not only do I have the opportunity to correct misleading information, but also give students and their support system the chance to see themselves in another light. When we have conversations like these, we are not just breaking barriers for current prospective students, but for generations to come.

What sets OU apart from other universities?

OU is a place of purpose and belonging. This campus truly embraces differences and creates spaces for students to be their genuine selves. Regardless of our background, we know the people who belong to our OU Family believe in the success of each person who steps foot on any OU campus. Through thick and thin, I have witnessed the impact this university leaves on so many lives.

What was your experience like as an undergraduate at OU?

I will forever cherish my time as an undergraduate at OU. As a student, I was cared for in a way I never expected. Along the way, I welcomed new lessons, challenges, discoveries, and obstacles—but I was never alone in these journeys. I gained an OU Family, and through my extracurricular involvement, my family grew. During undergrad, I spent so much of my time in the OU Student Life office. I can remember my very first and last time there as a student. I shared a part of myself in the Student Life office—I cried, laughed, studied, ate meals, played games, hosted and attended meetings, and programmed for events, but most importantly, I was provided a space to make OU my own.
