Q&A with Mr. and Miss Hispanic OU 2021

Mr. and Miss Hispanic OU (MMHOU) is an annual scholarship pageant organized and sponsored by the Hispanic American Student Association and Latino Programs & Services. For the past 25 years, the pageant has taken place each spring. Through an expansive collection of on-stage categories and an interview with judges, the pageant reveals the contestants’ passions for scholarship, service, and cultural awareness. Crowned royalty serves the OU community for the full academic year.

Adriana Gonzalez-Vega was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, and grew up in Yukon, OK. As the oldest in her family of five, Gonzalez-Vega says there is never a dull moment with her Puerto-Rican/Cuban family. To her, culture is something that brings people together, connects complete strangers, and establishes a community — because of this, Gonzalez-Vega sees every day as an opportunity to celebrate her heritage.

Dylan Yahir Ruiz
Class of 2024 | Industrial & Systems Engineering | Mexico City, Mexico; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

First-generation college student Dylan Yahir Ruiz was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and raised in southside Oklahoma City. He learned how to speak English from listening to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Today, Yahir Ruiz remains a music lover and completes his assignments while listening to Spanish music, which keeps him connected to his roots and the history of his identity.
