The Top 10 Reasons to Commit by May 1

Top 10 Reasons to Commit by May 1

As we get ready to welcome the class of 2029, here are some tips to help you best prepare for your next steps in the college journey.

1. Experience a stress-free senior year

Take in the final months of your high school career knowing that you found the perfect university. Committing to OU means you have time to spend with your loved ones and friends before embarking on your new adventure as a college students. You can also proudly display your school spirit by selecting one of our three limited poster designs in your OU Bound portal. We will mail it to you for free!

2. Create your best class schedule

The sooner you commit to OU, the sooner you can schedule your New Sooner Orientation, a mandatory and key step in preparing for OU. New Sooner Orientation connects you with an academic advisor, enrolls you in first semester classes at OU, and sets you up for success.

3. Make your transition to college as smooth as possible

Just like your last day of high school, move-in day will be here before you know it. Start checking off the next steps on your to-do list early by preparing for your move to Norman. We recommend making a list of your basic necessities for school and everyday life and then, if you're feeling creative, think of how you'll decorate your room and what you'll need to accomplish your vision.

Plus, mark your calendar for OU’s Camp Crimson experience August 20 through 24, 2025! Camp Crimson is OU's official welcome to all new students. After you move in to the residence halls in August, you will have a week full of connecting with other new students, learning about OU’s history and traditions, and getting to know campus! You will receive your move-in date over the summer from Housing & Food.

4. Get a jump start on your career & research goals

Get ahead by connecting with on-campus professional development opportunities, like the one-stop shop OU Career Center, or learning more about the research opportunities available to undergraduate students. Read how OU environmental geology graduate Bren Cable's freshman research grew into traveling to Africa to study the sediment of Lake Tanganyika.

5. Get ready to find your roommate

By submitting your enrollment deposit and completing a housing contract, you are one step closer to beginning your OU journey. Those who complete a housing contract and submit an enrollment deposit by May 1 can participate in room selection. Housing room selection access times will be determined by your enrollment deposit date. During room selection, you and your roommates can choose your own room. Visit housing.ou.edu to learn more about your housing options and view our housing FAQ page.

6. Meet your MoneyCoach

Finalize and personalize your financial plan for college through one-to-one interaction with your MoneyCoach. You’ll even be able to visit with your MoneyCoach throughout your entire time at OU, so it’s great to build this relationship early. For more information about OU's financial aid options and information, follow the OU Student Financial Center, @OUFinancialHelp

7. Discover the possibilities

OU is home to over 500+ student organizations, ranging from academic-specific to multi-cultural to special interest to student government to Greek life. Researching and finding organizations that share your interests now means you'll have an idea of the opportunities waiting for you when you arrive on campus.

8. Make it official with your Sooner Card Mobile ID

After you register for New Sooner Orientation, you'll be able to make your Sooner Card Mobile ID. Your Sooner Card Mobile ID connects you to campus, allowing you access to housing, athletic events, campus dining locations, fitness centers, and more.

9. Start building your community

Once you commit, start building a network of friends that will last a lifetime on ZeeMee. Whether you've already joined or have yet to log in, you can now access our exclusive admitted student community, with more than 4,000 already joined. ZeeMee is a platform where you can catch glimpses of campus life through live stream videos, meet other students considering coming to the University of Oklahoma, and chat with current OU upperclassmen and admissions counselors!

10. Announce you're #OUBound on social media

We love when members of our incoming class share their college decision on social media. Be sure to tag us at @Go2OU so we can celebrate with you and officially welcome you to the OU family! (Psst... You might even see yourself on our social media profile or story.)
