Nurses have one of the most important jobs in healthcare. They provide care and comfort for patients and their families, teach about illnesses and treatments, and promote health. Nursing is one of the fastest-growing careers. It is projected to continue to rapidly grow over the next few years. Nurses have a variety of opportunities to find work in hospitals, private practices, clinics, schools, and government agencies. OU's Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing is among the highest-ranked programs in the nation. Students complete in-class or online education requirements and apply this knowledge during clinical rotations. Students spend time working in different environments and gaining skills in a variety of nursing areas, including family, community, geriatric, critical care, and emergency nursing.
Prospective students can begin their college career at OU's Norman campus for general-education study with an emphasis in biology, chemistry, zoology or other science-related fields. After two years of academic work at the main campus, students may apply to the Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. OUHSC's campus offers students an engaging setting among students and faculty of other health and sciences fields. Upon graduation from the Bachelor of Science program, students are eligible to sit for the national examination for licensure as a registered nurse.
Nursing students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Students can then choose to further their education and pursue Master of Science in Nursing or a doctoral (PhD) degree.
Nursing students are typically interested in science and health care. Nursing students also enjoy working with people and are able to remain calm in crisis situations. High school preparation should include courses in science and mathematics. Anatomy and physiology would also be beneficial if offered.
