International development is an interdisciplinary academic field focused on understanding and addressing global challenges related to economic growth, social equity, and sustainable development, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It explores the complex interplay between poverty, inequality, governance, environmental sustainability, and human rights. Students in this field study a wide range of topics, including global economics, public policy, environmental sustainability, gender equity, healthcare, education, and the role of international organizations and non-governmental agencies in fostering progress. The major emphasizes critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and practical problem-solving skills to address pressing global issues.

A versatile major, International Development students can easily study abroad through a number of programs in nearly 80 countries. OU’s Study Center in Puebla, Mexico has been especially attractive to International Development majors. Programs to Brazil, Peru, and Uganda have also been popular. International Development majors can also "study away" in Washington DC during an annual Spring Break trip with a College of International Studies faculty member.
