Geographic Information Science

What is Geographic Information Science?

Geographic information science (GIS) majors address how geographic information systems and remote sensing are used for gathering, analyzing and visualizing all forms of geographically referenced information. Students use data to map, model, and analyze various problems related to geography and meteorology. Integrating computer technologies, people, and location, students reveal spatial relationships, patterns and trends in maps that lead to better decision making in dozens of professional fields. The nature of the degree allows for flexibility, as students can pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in GIS.

Do my interests fit?

GIS students typically have interests in:

  • Earth
  • Creating maps
  • Project design/management
  • Gathering & processing spatial data
  • Computer science
  • Problem solving

High school preparation should include math, science and computer courses, especially Earth and physical sciences.
