Russian

Program Description

Small classes and individual attention give students of OU's Russian program a chance to explore the rich cultural heritage of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Students interact with dedicated faculty from the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics to prepare for exciting careers involving Russian language or culture, and many students choose Russian as part of preparation for law school admission.

The Language Learning Center provides students with the most up-to-date technology for language instruction by providing students with access to online media, computer-based language programs and foreign films.

The OU Russian program offers regular conversation hours and immersion exercises so that students can practice their language skills in an informal setting. Two clubs for students interested in Russian exist on campus: Russian club and the Russian-Speaking Student Association (RUSSA).

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics encourages its students to study abroad to give them an on-the-ground perspective, and OU has exchange programs with several universities in Russia and former Soviet countries.

Many students studying Russian continue their education by pursuing graduate-level studies.

Interests & Skills

Students studying Russian typically have interests in foreign language, Slavic culture, literature, art and communication. High school preparation should include study of English grammar and history.

Notable Achievements

Many alumni and current students of OU's Russian program are members of Dobro Slovo, the national Slavic honor society. Students go on to law schools and doctoral programs around the country, including Middlebury College's prestigious Russian Language School.

Faculty members of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics have published exstensively. Because the department's faculty is active in research, they can present to their students the most current research findings, changing critical perspectives and scholarly debates. Many professors offer students the chance to participate in research through independent study and Honors Research Assistantships, and each spring, Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics students present papers at Undergraduate Research Day.
