Empowering student success through accurate placement into OU courses is the primary focus of the Assessment Center. Individual assessments are available for math, reading and English.
If a student has taken a college class via concurrent enrollment in high school, it may eliminate their need to assess. In order to determine the need to assess, the student must submit an official transcript from the college or university where the concurrent course was completed showing the final grade of the course to OU.
Schedule: Appointments are to be made online at https://iadvise.ou.edu/assess

For all ALEKS assessments, a student must be enrolled in the class and the class have started before the score used to enroll in that class expires. ALEKS scores are valid for one calendar year. Students will need to retake the assessment if scores are expired. Each assessment after the first requires 10 hours in the learning modules. A student can assess a maximum of three times in each testing cohort.
Math Offer Models are set to expire on 10/1, every year. Math Offer Models are only offered for the fall semester for direct from high school students with no gap year.
Any successful college-level non-MATH credit constitutes English/Reading Readiness.
A HERO score of 1 constitutes English/Reading readiness. If no applicable HERO score and ACT/SAT are below threshold listed, a student will need to take Accuplacer. A student can assess 3 times in each testing cohort.

Based on a student's submitted academic information, The University of Oklahoma may require an ALEKS Mathematics Placement Assessment, Accuplacer Reading Placement Assessment, and/or English Placement Assessment to determine readiness for various courses.
If you took concurrent or other courses for college credit while in high school, your assessment requirements may be adjusted. Please submit the official transcript by requesting that the institution where you took the course send an official electronic transcript to oardocuments@ou.edu on your behalf or you can drop off a sealed official copy to Buchanan Hall (1000 Asp Ave), first floor, Admissions & Recruitment, Room 127. If you have specific questions about transferring credit to OU, please call 405-325-0514 or email te@ou.edu. Once your transcript has been received, revision of your assessment needs may be completed.
The ALEKS Placement Assessment helps determine appropriate math level(s) for incoming and current OU students. The ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from basic math through pre-calculus and will provide an accurate description of a student’s math skills and a recommended course placement.
Note: Are you an incoming freshman at OU? You will receive your Math Offer after you schedule your New Sooner Orientation day. Click here for Math Offer FAQs. You can also login and see your Math Offer on your New Sooner Orientation registration confirmation page.
There are no enrollment restrictions for students with an ACT reading sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing score of 510 or higher. All incoming OU students with scores that do not meet this threshold are required to take a Reading Placement Assessment to determine whether they must take a developmental reading course before moving on to higher reading level courses.
There are no enrollment restrictions for students with an ACT English sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing score of 510 or higher. There are no enrollment restrictions for students with an ACT English sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing score of 510 or higher. All incoming OU students who do not meet this threshold are required to take a writing assessment to determine whether they must take a developmental English course before moving on to ENGL 1113.
OU’s writing assessment/placement is given through the College Board’s Accuplacer program. Accuplacer uses web-based assessments designed to evaluate a student’s writing skills and measure a student's understanding of sentence structure, which is what makes a sentence complete and clear. Some questions deal with the logic of the sentence, and others with the relationships between two sentences.
The writing assessment is 25 questions and is untimed, although the average test takes about one hour.
If you have questions, please email the Assessment Center at assess@ou.edu.
Once you have taken your writing assessment, you can review your course placement below.
Your Accuplacer writing test will be virtually proctored by the OU Academic Success Center's Assessment Center, via Zoom. You will schedule your assessment through your New Sooner Orientation registration. If you need to reschedule your English Assessment, click here.
