Advising & Enrollment

The Academic Success Center Advising office supports students in transitioning to the University of Oklahoma by providing personalized guidance, supporting holistic development, and referring appropriate resources. We are committed to empowering students as they explore their individualized pathways to success through mutual collaboration.

Our advisors are available year-round to help you decide on majors, select appropriate courses, and become acquainted with University policies and resources. After advisement, you can enroll in classes online at one.ou.edu. Students in their first semester of college must enroll through the New Sooner Orientation program.

Meeting with the Advising Team

ASC offers over 20 trained advisors ready to help you strategically plan your college career and achieve your academic goals. They provide personalized guidance on course selection, degree pathways, and extracurricular opportunities, ensuring you make the most of your educational experience.  Advisors meet with students by appointment in person and online as well as offering a drop-in option, so someone is always available to answer your course and degree program questions.

Enrolling in Courses

Undergraduate students must meet with their advisor before enrolling each semester. A hold will be placed on your account until this step is complete. Your enrollment window is based on the number of credit hours you have earned or participation in certain university honors programs so, generally speaking, the more hours you have, the earlier you can enroll. You will enroll in your classes at one.ou.edu. ONE allows students to browse class schedules, enroll online, and much more!

Prepare to be Advised

You are encouraged to prepare for your advising meeting. We recommend doing the following to have the most productive session:

  • Many new students have not chosen a major, and at least half of the students who have declared a major will change degree programs during their first year. Taking career assessments can assist in giving some direction and clarity for general aptitudes, talents, and skillsYou can also meet with nationally recognized exploration coaches to explore degree options.
  • Check out the degree requirements for your major(s) and minor(s) to understand coursework and other requirements.
  • Be familiar with the General Education requirements. These are courses that are common to every degree program at the University.
  • Find courses and free electives you are interested in taking. When you meet with your advisor, you will discuss how those courses may or may not fit into your degree plan, including if they count towards your General Education requirements.

Pre-Health and Pre-Med Advising

The assistance of an advisor is critical to the pre-health students who desire to complete their admission requirements while maintaining a competitive grade point average for admission to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (HSC).

HOW IT WORKS

ASC advises pre-health students seeking to enter professional health fields, including communication sciences and disorders, dental hygiene, nursing, nutritional sciences, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, sonography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and radiography. Pre-Med advisors for students interested in medical, podiatric, dental, optometry, or physician assistant graduate career programs are available by appointment only in Cate 1. Students can book appointments at iAdvise.ou.edu.

An Afternoon with OUHSC is an event hosted by HSC Student Affairs for prospective students interested in an OU Health Sciences program. The events are hosted at various institutions across Oklahoma. Students can meet one-on-one with representatives from any of the seven academic colleges with OU Health Sciences. They can ask questions about admissions, have transcripts evaluated, find out about student life, or get general information regarding HSC’s academic programs and campus.
