OU Lecture Series Features Nobel Laureate Robert Engle Sept. 19

September 20, 2019

Robert Engle, 2003 Nobel Prize award winner and finance professor at the New York University Stern School of Business, will be the featured speaker in the Deane and Ginger Kanaly Lecture Series, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the University of Oklahoma. The event will be held in Meacham Auditorium inside Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the lecture, which is titled Prospects of Global Financial Stability.

The Kanaly Lecture Series, which is open to the public without charge, is offered through the Michael F. Price College of Business. Seating is limited, and registration is requested online at http://price.ou.edu/Kanaly by Sept. 13.

“We are grateful to the Kanaly family for continuing to support the Price College of Business through this incredible lecture series,” said Wayne Thomas, interim dean at the Price College of Business. “By helping expose our students and the university community to the expertise and wisdom of guest presenters like Mr. Engle, we are able to further inspire our students to become the leaders our state and nation need. We invite the public to join us in welcoming Mr. Engle to Oklahoma during his insightful lecture.”

Engle is the Michael Armellino Professor of Management and Financial Services at NYU Stern School. Engle was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics for his research on the concept of autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity. He developed this method for statistical modeling of time-varying volatility and demonstrated that these techniques accurately capture the properties of many time series. Engle shared the prize with Clive W. J. Granger of the University of California at San Diego.

Engle also is the director of the Volatility Institute at the Stern School at NYU. In this role, he has developed research tools to track risks in the global economy and make these publicly available on the V-LAB website. These measures include volatility, correlation, long run value at risk and liquidity, which are updated daily for thousands of global financial assets.

Engle is a co-founding president of the Society for Financial Econometrics, a global nonprofit organization housed at NYU. Before joining NYU Stern in 2000, he was Chancellor’s Associates Professor and Economics department chair at the University of California, San Diego, and associate professor of economics at MIT. He is a member of the National Academy of Science.

The Deane and Ginger Kanaly Lecture Series is named in honor of the late E. Deane Kanaly, founder and chairman of Kanaly Trust Co., and his wife, Virginia L. “Ginger” Kanaly, who are both OU business alumni. Deane Kanaly earned a bachelor’s degree in business statistics in 1952 and an MBA in 1953, and Ginger Kanaly earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1952.
