Dr. Miloš Savić is a Professor in the David and Judi Proctor Department of Mathematics. Having earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics at New Mexico State University, he focuses his research in undergraduate mathematics education. In 2012, he helped create the Creativity Research Group that investigates fostering mathematical creativity at the undergraduate level. Dr. Savić has been on the board of the International Group for Mathematical Creativity and Giftedness, editorial board of the Ball State Undergraduate Mathematics Exchange, and a guest editor of the Journal of Humanistic Mathematics. Along with two other co-authors, he will be publishing a book in 2022 entitled “Mathematical Creativity: A Developmental Perspective” from Springer International Press.
Dr. Savić also believes in the impact of undergraduate research opportunities. He has mentored 22 undergraduate students, seven of which have published journal articles or conference proceedings. Topics have included attitudes, self-efficacy, math motivation and math anxiety, experiences of d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students in undergraduate math classrooms, and students experiencing disability in undergraduate math education. He has written a book chapter about how to conduct undergraduate research in math education and has a co-authored article about the care and humanity that OU faculty provided to students conducting undergraduate research during COVID. More recently, Dr. Savić was appointed as the Director for the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) program in the Honors College, which, in 2022, had over 80 students participating in many different research fields throughout OU.
“There is immense value in the experience of undergraduate research for students,” said Dr. Savić. “Whether a student chooses to enter academia or industry, their undergraduate research experience will contribute to their development of essential life skills such as communication, independence, and self-efficacy. The UReCA office is about opportunities – we want to provide that spark, that Eureka moment, which can change a student’s career path. I am honored to be the Director that may offer that catalyst for their journey.”
