Bachelor of Arts in Social Work Degree Program Overview

The BASW degree provides the foundation skills of working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities with a systems perspective that incorporates research, policy, and diversity. Graduates work as case managers, behavioral health rehabilitation specialists, or many other areas of practice and are also eligible for a one year program for the MSW.

The programs at OU-Tulsa are designed for working adults with busy lives. That means classes are offered evenings and weekends, and often in formats that combine classroom learning with online modules to help manage delivery of content without losing valuable in-person connections. The faculty are engaged and active, often incorporating students into research and creating opportunities for learning that are useful right away

Program Requirements

  • Copy of any college/ university transcript(s)
  • Resume
  • Personal Statement (statement includes interest in social work profession; challenges/successes in education, employment, personal life; description of work experience in a service capacity; personal experiences which have equipped you to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; and difficulties you may encounter working with individuals
  • Two Letters of recommendation (this can be submitted here or emailed to campus contact)

Bachelor of Arts in Social Work Curriculum

The BASW program offers the courses of the social work major, creating a foundation in practice with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations, as well as an understanding of research, diversity and oppression, human behavior, and policy. Students do a practicum at an agency demonstrating their learning through providing valuable services to clients.

Career Paths


There are 99 types of jobs in the social work field beyond child welfare. Salaries for Oklahoma social workers have increased significantly in the past few years. Now is the time to become a Social Worker. 

Some typical career paths include:

  • Case Manager
  • Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist
  • Child Protective Services Worker

Scholarships


Through the generous support of the The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, many scholarships are available to support BASW students at the OU-Tulsa campus.  These scholarships are mainly based on GPA and financial need.  The dollar amount of these scholarships varies. Students starting the program in the spring or summer are also eligible to apply.
