A Message from the President

With the beginning of April, the nation has clearly moved into perseverance mode. We are all being called upon to sacrifice for the wellbeing of society right now. I want to extend my sincere appreciation for each of you in the OU-Tulsa community as you do your part to “flatten the curve” and keep our organization operating during this unprecedented time. I especially want to thank our staff members whose roles necessitate them continuing to be on campus in a time of such uncertainty. We see you and thank you for your commitment.

The university leadership continues to look to the future and make plans based on ensuring the safety of everyone. On that note, hopefully you’ve had a chance to read through the just-announced plans for summer. Norman-based programs will be conducted online this summer and HSC programs will be addressed by each college individually. Unfortunately, all on-campus and university-sponsored events are cancelled through at least July 31. 

I also have updated information regarding convocation: We made the difficult decision to cancel OU-Tulsa’s regular, in-person convocation ceremony for 2020. But there are options for our graduating students. There will be a virtual ceremony held at 7 p.m. on May 8 (watch for more details coming soon) and a special ceremony is being planned for early August in Norman to celebrate 2020 graduates. 

All 2020 OU-Tulsa graduates will also be invited to participate in the OU-Tulsa 2021 Convocation ceremony next spring. 

As we work to stay connected while keeping our distance, be on the lookout for opportunities to share how you’re making it through these days. Next week we’ll be asking everyone to share pictures of their current “co-workers” or “study buddies.” We’re talking about pets, children, roommates, parents, house plants -- whomever or whatever is keeping you company. 

I am sincerely grateful for all of you -- students, faculty and staff -- for doing your best for your families, your university and the community. This time is a tunnel we are all traveling through – not a pit we have fallen into. There will be an end and we will get there together.

Let’s look to the future and remember there are brighter days ahead.
