Admissions

Students are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Education degree completion program at OU-Tulsa after they have:

  • Satisfactorily completed the required general education courses for the degree program from an accredited institution as described in the document above. 
  • A minimum of a 2.75 grade point average (OU retention and combined retention) on all coursework attempted.
  • Successfully completed the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET) or maintained a 3.0 in Gen Eds.

Each July there will be an orientation with an admissions committee for those who have applied to the program.  After the orientation, students are conditionally admitted pending a clear OSBI/FBI background check, and Food Handlers Certificate.

In order to obtain the Master of Arts in Integrated Childhood Well-Being, students must complete all of the courses in the following four areas: (1) Economic Well-Being, (2) Education, (3) Health and (4) Family and Community, plus the statistics course with the grade of C or better.

OU utilizes an online graduate application system available at the following link: www.gograd.ou.edu/apply

All items required for admission are included in the online application. Below is a list of items necessary to complete the online doctoral application:

  • Names and email addresses for letters of reference from at least three persons who are familiar with your qualifications. Include faculty members with whom you have done graduate work and others who have personal knowledge of your professional experience.
  • Graduate Record Examination general test scores. Information about the GRE is available via the Internet at www.gre.org. (Only scores within the past five years can be considered). Advance appointments to take the computer-based test locally can be made by contacting Prometric Testing Center at 918-747-9333.
  • A resume, and if the applicant chooses, a narrative autobiography emphasizing career experience.
  • A short essay including a statement of career objectives and why a Ph.D. in ECE will assist you in meeting your career objectives.
  • Official transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate work.
  • One academic writing sample, such as a published article or graded graduate-level research paper.

*Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree in early childhood, child development, social work, or a related field, and have a minimum of three years experience working directly with children to be eligible for admission.

The master's program on the Tulsa campus is offered in a cohort format which begins each Fall.  The application deadline for Fall admission is May 15. The program requires a minimum of 36 semester credit hours of graduate credit and successful completion of a Comprehensive Electronic Portfolio.

Applicants must be accepted by both the program for which they are applying and the Graduate College. Doctoral admissions for the Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs occur simultaneously, allowing applicants to apply for EITHER program.  Any applicant who is unsure about the most appropriate program given his or her needs is allowed flexibility in reaching a decision, in consultation with the EACS doctoral admission committee. 

The development of research competency is one of the critical features of a Ph.D. program. The student must demonstrate proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

Research Proficiency Requirements

  1. EACS, or EDS 6970 Pro Seminar, 3 credits, required course1 A "Pro"2 Seminar taught by Department faculty that introduces students to doctoral study, including quantitative and qualitative approaches, library resources, various writing styles and other logistical considerations.

Undergraduate Admission Process

The 2-step admissions process for undergraduate students seeking to enter the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education is explained below. This information applies to students coming to the college from University College as well as those transferring from another college or institution.

Admission to the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education

Students at the University of Oklahoma are eligible for admission to the college after they have:

  • a minimum of 24 college-level semester hours earned from an accredited institution of higher learning;
  • a minimum 2.75 combined retention grade point average on all coursework attempted;
  • declared a major in education.

Full Admission to a Certification Program

Students seeking full admission to a teacher education program must meet the following criteria:

  1. 30 college-level hours minimum from an accredited institution of higher learning*;
    • 2.75 grade point average (OU retention);
    • 2.75 grade point average (COMB retention)
  2. 24 hours with a "C" or better:
    • ENGL 1113 - 3 hours
    • PSC1113 - 3 hours
    • ENGL 1213 - 3 hours
    • BIO/PHYS SCI - 3 hours
    • MATH (Gen Ed Core I) - 3 hours
    • SOC/PSY/ANTH (1113) - 3 hours (Science Ed majors: please email JRCoE Undergraduate Advising office, jrcoe.advising@ou.edu, for an approved substitute.)
    • HIST 1483/1493 - 3 hours
    • Gen Ed Core IV-AF, WC, NWC; Foreign Language; or other advisor
    • approved Gen Ed Course - 3 hours
  3. Meet one of the six performance criteria listed by Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) that students may use to qualify for admission into an Oklahoma teacher education program. Speak with your Education Advisor for more details. 
  4. Background Check: All students will need to complete the Background Check process when you apply for full admission. Students will receive an electronic background check link from their advisor.
  5. Full Admission Essay: Full admission to a teacher education program requires the submission of an essay response of a 2-3 pages double-spaced essay (750 words) response to the following prompt:
    Early Childhood Education majors:
    - Discuss your desire to enter the teaching profession. Information regarding previous experience working with children and qualities and attributes that will positively contribute to success in the teaching environment should also be included.
    Your essay will be uploaded as part of your online application for Full Admission.
  6. If records are not already showing in the One portal, submit transcripts of all course work taken at other institutions after admission to OU.

Upon completion of items 1-6 you will be eligible to apply for full admission in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education.  You will be notified by email when the application website opens. Additionally, you will be notified by email of the date and time for your full admission Interview. After your interview and acceptance into the program, you will be notified via email from the One portal when you receive permission to enroll in education courses.
 

* Can include AP, CLEP, Concurrent Enrollment and Transfer courses. Does not include remedial courses or any course with a number beginning with a 0.

Full Admission Checklist (PDF)

Academic credit from any division of the University of Oklahoma - Norman campus, Health Sciences Center, OU-Tulsa, or Continuing Education - is considered resident credit at the University of Oklahoma. Grades and hours earned in any of these divisions are included in the OU retention and cumulative grade point averages for purposes of admission or readmission to the University, and to the individual colleges within the University.

Admission requirements are subject to change on an annual basis. For information that applies to you, please consult the degree checksheet in effect at the time of your first enrollment in the state system.

Graduate College Admission Criteria

  • The Graduate Dean governs admission and enrollment in the Graduate College. Except for those in unclassified status, the student must be recommended for admission by an academic unit.
  • All admissions to the Graduate College require that the student hold a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Undergraduates in their final semester at accredited colleges and universities may apply for admission to the Graduate College.
