Awards Ceremony, Ice Cream Social Among Events Lined Up for 2013 OU Staff Week

NORMAN – Health and craft fairs, an awards ceremony, an ice cream social, a picnic and an art show are among the events scheduled during the University of Oklahoma Norman campus Staff Week April 22 through 26. This year’s Staff Week theme is “Celebrating Sooner Spirit.” Donations of canned food items to benefit Norman’s Food for Friends may be brought to all of the activities except for the awards ceremony.

A listing of events follows:

Monday – Two sessions of bingo are planned, the first from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the T. Howard McCasland Field House, 151 W. Brooks St., and the second from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Couch Restaurants, 309 W. Third St. Hot dogs and chips will be available for purchase for $1 during the early session, and complimentary refreshments will be available during the afternoon session. The event is sponsored by the Organizational Staff Council.

Tuesday – The Staff Awards ceremony, honoring staff for achievement, length of service and retirement, is set for 11 a.m. in the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom in Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave. Held in conjunction with the ceremony will be the Staff Week Art Exhibition and Competition, featuring the artistic talents of staff, in the Stephenson Research and Technology Center, 101 David L. Boren Blvd. A light lunch will be provided following the awards ceremony, which is sponsored by the OU Staff Senate Awards Committee. The art exhibit, sponsored by the Informational Staff Association, will include a reception featuring refreshments, entertainment and door prizes from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Wednesday – The Health and Information Fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Thurman J. White Forum Building, 1704 Asp Ave. It will feature a hamburger/chicken/veggie burger cookout beginning at 11 a.m. Cost is $2 for the cookout. Both events sponsored by the Staff Week Committee.

Thursday – The Craft and Hobby Fair and Ice Cream Social will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Armory, 290 W. Brooks St. Chopped barbecue sandwiches and chips will be available for $3 at the craft fair. The craft and hobby fair is sponsored by the Staff Week Committee, and the ice cream social is sponsored by the Hourly Employees Council.

Friday – The Taste of OU, featuring  foods from campus restaurants,  is set from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brooks Mall. In the event of rain, the Taste of OU will be moved to the Armory. Tickets, which are $4, are available at all other Staff Week events through Wednesday. The Taste of OU is sponsored by the Administrative Staff Council. Announcement of the week’s grand prize winners will be announced during this event.

Complimentary health screenings will be offered each day in different locations; please check the Staff Week website listed below for details.

The prizes awarded during Staff Week were donated by local merchants.

OU Faculty Member Appointed Chair of International Astronomical Union Working Group

NORMAN –A University of Oklahoma professor, Steven Gullberg, has been appointed world chair for archeoastronomy by the International Astronomical Union. As chair, Gullberg will work with 31 nations to further the research and global advancement of archeoastronomy and astronomy in culture. Read more

OU Math Professors to Research Active Learning in Undergraduate Math Education

NORMAN –A University of Oklahoma mathematics professor, Milos Savic, has received a two-year, $93,298 grant from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities to help undergraduate students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees succeed in introductory math courses. Savic and team will use the grant to improve and assess a recently-developed active learning pre-calculus course taught to 1,000 OU students each year.  Read more
