An honorary degree is intended to honor individuals who have made sustained achievements of lasting significance. It is given in recognition of extraordinary achievement or outstanding contributions to the welfare and/or enrichment of the University of Oklahoma, the state, the nation, or the world. The award may be given to any individual who has made outstanding contributions to a field or profession represented at the University.
At the University of Oklahoma, the highest recognition that can be bestowed, other than the earned doctorate, is the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
