Bogard recently spoke with Price College and shared valuable insights into building a successful business while staying true to oneself.

Can you tell us about your background and how you came to Price College?

“I was born in Norman and attended Norman High School. I grew up on an emu farm on the outskirts of town. Watching emus hatch in our home was a magical and unique experience to have as a child. I always knew I’d likely attend the University of Oklahoma. Despite initial reservations about staying in my hometown for college, securing a scholarship made the decision clear.

I was initially torn between pursuing business and occupational therapy, but a few science classes clarified that business was my best path. It offered a broad foundation and numerous career options, which was important as I was still undecided about my future. Price College was a perfect place for me to find my direction.”

Can you share about your experience as a student and why you chose to major in Marketing?

“I loved my time at Price College. It helped me grow and mature. I enjoyed my coursework, loved the professors, and felt connected to the culture. Choosing Marketing and Supply Chain Management as a major came from taking a few classes and discovering my excitement and passion for it. Marketing was broad enough to provide a wide range of options after graduating, which suited me well. The business core foundation I gained at Price College has been the springboard for my career over the past 17 years.”

Can you tell us about your career journey and any obstacles you faced along the way?

“After graduating, I was thrilled to get a job with Fossil [the fashion accessories company] in Dallas. I loved the people and culture, and I enjoyed applying the foundational business principles I learned at Price College. The opportunity to grow and learn from others was invaluable.

After six years, I secured a job through my Fossil network as the International Brand Manager for a watch company in New York City. I moved and started traveling the world, helping build the brand in various markets like London, Hong Kong, Italy, and Switzerland. It was an amazing experience.

Unfortunately, the company was acquired, and many positions, including mine, were eliminated. I was devastated! It was one of the hardest times in my life. I found myself questioning my value, worth, and future direction while living in expensive New York City with almost no savings. I didn’t know what to do.

With support of my then-boyfriend (now husband), I got my real estate license to fund my own business. I quickly recognized the potential in real estate. Rooted in my Oklahoma core values - honesty, integrity, humility, and genuineness – and the principles from business school, we transformed a side hustle into a full-fledged business: Bogard New York. In 2020, we formed an LLC with a 10-person team. My husband is from Texas, so we like to say that we offer a small-town feel in the big-city office.

We work closely with Ryan Serhant, the real estate industry giant from Million Dollar Listing, who recruited us to help build his company.  We have been featured in the Washington Post, Inman, and The Real Deal, among others. Bogard New York recently achieved a top ranking for real estate teams in New York – 35th in New York City and 40th in the state out of 82,000 professionals, placing us in the top 0.01% nationally.

We are on track to hit $150 million in sales this year, and some of our agents will be featured in the upcoming Netflix real estate reality series Owning Manhattan, launching on June 28. The series includes eight episodes, with my agent, Jessica Markowski, heavily featured. It’s been a passion-filled journey to reach this point.”

What advice would you give current business school students or aspiring entrepreneurs?

“We are perpetual scholars in life; education never ends. After graduating, stay curious and keep learning. Be humble and open-minded. The more you learn from those around you and your industry, the more you'll benefit. There's an incubation period for learning and gaining experience. It takes time.

Build a network. Start a lunch group across different departments at your company and connect with people at various levels. No one is preventing you from accessing upper management. I fast-tracked a real estate career by learning from my professors, peers at Fossil, higher-ups, and people I met globally. Don't hold yourself back. Pursue what you love and make the most of every opportunity.”
