Campus, outdoor:

 

OU has installed special telephones at various outdoor locations in academic and housing areas on campus that are connected directly to the OU police - no money - no dialing. These phones can be located by a blue light and a blue sign or blue pole with the word:

"EMERGENCY"

For older enclosed “cabinet” style phones, simply open the blue cabinet and lift the handset to talk to the police dispatcher.

 

For newer push-button “speaker phones”, simply push the button near the speaker grill to talk to the police dispatcher.

Teenline:  800-852-TEEN (8336) Teenline, in operation every day from noon to midnight, offers a caring listener for teens who have questions or concerns about relationships, alcohol and other drug abuse, sexuality, and other topics. Teenline workers are trained to respond to crisis calls, but most callers simply want information or someone who will listen. Teenline exists to help young people prevent problems, solve conflicts, and deal with the concerns that affect their lives. All calls are free and confidential. Many Teenline workers are teens or young adults themselves, well prepared to relate to issues of concern to others in their age group. Reach-Out hotline: 800-522-9054 Reach-Out is the ODMHSAS's 24-hour toll free information and referral hotline. Note concerning 1-800 or “toll free” 800 numbers:

 

North American toll-free numbers, sometimes called "One-800 numbers" include the area codes 800 since 1967, 888 (since 1996), 877 (since 1998), 866 (since 2000) and 855 (since 2010). Area codes reserved for future expansion include 844, 833, 822, 880 through 887, and 889.

 

Some “regular” area codes may be deceptively similar to toll-free prefixes (e.g., 801, 818, 860, etc.) and have been exploited by fraudsters in international locations that can be direct-dialed with what appear, at first glance to be domestic area codes, including 809, 829, and 849, which are official prefixes for the Dominican Republic and 876 which is the area code for Jamaica. Toll-free numbers are also sometimes confused with 900-numbers, for which the telephone company bills the callers at rates far in excess of long-distance service rates for services such as recorded information or live chat.

 

Toll-free numbers are specific to each country. For example, a Sweden Toll-free number starts 020 and in Ireland, Thailand or Australia a Toll-free number would start with 1800-xxxxxx.
