Scholastic Regulations

Students will be admitted to the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy once they complete the following requirements:

  • First-Year applicants who are direct from high school must be admitted to OU and declare a major within Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.
  • Current OU students must have a retention GPA of 2.50 or higher unless they are changing within the first semester at OU.
  • Transfer students must be admitted to the University of Oklahoma and have a retention GPA of a 2.50 or higher.
  • University of Oklahoma readmits must have an OU retention and combined retention GPA of a 2.50 or higher.

Mewbourne College students must maintain a minimum 2.5 combined, OU, semester, and major retention GPA to be in good standing with the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.

Mewbourne College students must earn a grade of C or better to successfully complete every course required by their major's degree sheet for graduation. Major, OU, and Combined GPAs need to be a minimum of 2.50.

Mewbourne College students are allowed no more than three attempts per course to successfully complete the course. Unsuccessful attempts include earned grades of D, F, I, U, AU, W, and AW.

A student who is dismissed from the Mewbourne College (stopped out) is unlikely to be readmitted. Students are eligible to apply for readmission after at least 2 full (fall and spring) semesters have elapsed since the date of dismissal and they have significantly improved their performance in courses that are technically demanding and relevant to an engineering/science education. Applying for readmission does not guarantee that a student will be readmitted. Each request is considered on its individual merit. If the student is readmitted to the MCEE, the student will be placed on an Academic Performance Contract. Students who are dismissed from the MCEE for a second time are not eligible for readmission.

Please Note: A grade of C or better is required to satisfy course prerequisites. Students who earn D's and/or F's in prerequisite courses may be removed from courses for which they are no longer eligible. Consult your Mewbourne College advisor if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students are required to be advised prior to each enrollment period and are reminded by Student Services through their OU email to schedule their advising appointment. We recommend scheduling by the end of November and March. We offer both in-person and virtual appointments.

NEW First-Year & Transfer Students will be advised during New Sooner Orientation.

Although the institutional definition and the financial aid requirement for full-time undergraduate enrollment status are 12 credit hours per regular fall or spring semester, it is impossible to graduate in four years with fewer than 15 credit hours per regular semester or 30 credit hours per academic year.

Most students are capable of taking 15 to 16 hours per semester, and OU encourages you to consider that. However, students who are not pacing their enrollments in such a manner should consider Intersession and/or Summer term enrollments. A student needs to average at least 31 hours of completed and applicable coursework each year to have an opportunity to graduate in four years.

Understanding how to use and read the OU Academic Calendar for each term is the responsibility of an individual student. Please contact the Enrollment Services office at 325-3572 for questions about Cancellation, Drop, and Complete Withdrawal deadlines.

Student Services Center is located on the first floor of Sarkeys Energy Center in room P119 and has flags hanging from the ceiling outside the office.

Please call us at (405) 325-4005 if you need directions, as this building is not easy to navigate.
