The Nutcracker Takes the Stage
November 27th, 2007.
The Nutcracker will grace the stage at The University of Oklahoma Norman campus, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 29 in the Rupel J. Jones Theatre, 536 Elm Ave.
The Nutcracker will continue at 8 p.m. on November 30, December 1 and December 6-8, 2007. The production will perform Sunday matinees at 3p.m. on December 1, 2 and 9.
Performed in two acts, The Nutcracker is one of the last of Tchaikovsky’s full-length ballets. It is based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale of The Nutcracker and The Mouse King and was first performed at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia on Dec. 18, 1892. The French choreographer Marius Petipa worked closely with composer Peter Illych Tchaikovsky on the score. Fashioned after the choreography of the great Russian master, Lev Ivanov, who created the very first Nutcracker more than 100 years ago, the production is dazzling, with virtuoso dancing complemented by opulent sets and costumes.
