Can I work while I wait to receive my SSN?

An F-1 student may work while the SSA processes the SSN application. US employers may wish to reference the SSA fact sheet, Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign Workers, which contains information on how to report wages for an employee who has not yet received a SSN.
