Graduating with Honors

Students who complete all Honors College requirements are eligible to graduate with Honors from the University of Oklahoma, and the Honors College designation will be listed on their final transcript. Honors graduates wear an additional regalia item signifying their academic achievement with their cap and gown during the commencement ceremony, and Honors designations will be listed in the commencement program.

The Honors College communicates directly with the Registrar to determine which students earn the degree designations below.

Graduate

Requirements for Honors College Completion:

  • 3 hours of Honors Perspectives (HON 2963/2973)
  • 3 hours of Honors Colloquium (HON 3993)
  • 3 hours Researcch 3980
  • 9 hours of Honors elective credit
  • "C" or higher earned in all Honors courses
  • Thesis submitted to and accepted by the Honors College 
  • Both an OU Retention GPA and a Combined Retention GPA of at least 3.4

Completion of Honors College requirements will be noted on the final transcript. Honors College graduates will receive a unique regalia item in addition to any Latin honors regalia that they may earn. 

Students who have been subject to sanctions for academic misconduct will be reviewed individually. 

Requirements for Latin Honorifics:

Latin Honorifics are managed by the Office of Graduation and Persistance Support. Details on official eligiblity requirements are available here. See Honors College specific information below:

Honors College students who entered OU prior to Fall 2024 must have the following OU Retention GPA and Combined Retention GPA to earn Latin honorifics at the time of graduation:

  • 3.40 to 3.59 cum Laude
  • 3.60 to 3.79 Magna cum Laude
  • 3.80 to 4.00 Summa cum Laude

Honors College students who enter OU in Fall 2024 and later must have the following OU Retention GPA and Combined Retention GPA to earn Latin honorifics at the time of graduation: 

  • 3.60 to 3.74 cum Laude
  • 3.75 to 3.89 Magna cum Laude 
  • 3.90 to 4.00 Summa cum Laude

Both the final transcript and the diploma will carry the designation of Summa cum Laude, Magna cum Laude, or cum Laude.

Honors Graduation

Spring 2024 Honors Graduation Reception is May 10 from 3-5pm at the David L. Boren Hall

In order to celebrate the extra accomplishments of those graduating with Honors, the Honors College hosts a late afternoon/early evening graduation reception in the Spring held in David L. Boren Hall. The event is come-and-go, and no RSVP is needed.  Please bring your regalia for the photos. There will be a 'gown check' for you to store your robes.
