Language Skills Test

Language Skills Test

The LST is a language and skills test required of all students wishing to major in journalism and mass communications here at Gaylord College. Prior to entry in any Gaylord degree program, students must complete both the LST and the AIT (Academic Integrity Test) as well as complete JMC 1013: Intro to Media with an average of 70. After meeting both requirements, students will begin advising with Gaylord College advising staff and will be able to enroll in JMC 2033: Media Writing and Storytelling.

Though the LST is, by definition, an entrance exam for Gaylord College, Gaylord provides students with a multitude of resources to study for the exam before taking it. Below you will find a series of exercises and practice tests that demonstrate both the format of the exam and the skills that will be tested.

These sample tests are written in the same format as the LST and will help students gauge their readiness before taking the exam. At the end of each practice tests, answer keys are provided to help students check their work and know what areas need improvement. If you are having difficulty with any of the exercises or practice tests, please refer to the texts listed below for further instruction.

  • Media Writer's Handbook, by George T. Arnold
  • Working With Words (4th ed.), by Brian S. Brooks, et al.
  • A Pocket Style Manual (2nd ed.), by Diana Hacker
  • When Words Collide (5th ed.), by Lauren Kessler and Duncan McDonald

Located in the Student Services Center, the language skills test is administered any time throughout the school year. Simply walk into student services and ask to take the LST. The test will then be loaded onto canvas and you will be able to take it from your own laptop anywhere on campus.

The LST consists of 80 multiple choice questions that are grouped into four sections: spelling, frequently confused words and irregular verb forms, identifying parts of a sentence, and general language skills. Though the LST takes most students about 45 minutes to complete, each student is given 2 hours to complete the test.

In order to pass, students must get a 70 percent (56 out of 80). To do so, students may take the test up to 3 times whenever they feel comfortable and test results are available immediately after exam completion.
