Claudia Benge, an OU junior, went to Texas for the Red River Rivalry. Interning for OU Athletic Communications since spring 2022, Benge was excited for the opportunity to work one of the biggest football games of the year. She works alongside interns and full-time communications staff.
“The department asked if any of the interns would be interested in working the game, and I immediately said yes. When else will I be able to sit in the press box of the Cotton Bowl? It is an incredible opportunity and experience,” Benge said. Having previous experience, Benge worked home football games last year while interning, although, this was her first Red River Rivalry. “I’ve been to the game as a student, but I am really excited to experience it from behind the scenes,” Benge said.
Along with her team, Benge had all-access to the Cotton Bowl stadium, giving real-life experience in her career field.
“The game is so high stakes and emotional. You are not supposed to show any emotion or cheer in the press box,” Benge said in an interview before the game. “It will be hard for me not to show emotion, but I know I have to keep it professional.”
Having had the opportunity to work on such a high stakes game, Benge was grateful for her experience and excited for the weekend to come. Focusing her career on sports, she hopes for a job with a sports team or a traditional PR firm. Working for the communications department, her internship entails different jobs within itself.
“That involves being in the press box to help record stats, running stat sheets to the media, running game books to the media, and with interviews during post-game press conferences,” Benge said.
Getting involved early, Benge joined Gaylord Women in Sports, PRSSA and now Athletic Communications to further her experience in her career.
“I was aware of how I could involve myself, but I had no idea the sheer amount of different opportunities that were at my fingertips. Both my professors and classmates care about helping me become the best public relations professional,” Benge said. Professors and classmates encouraged and supported Benge in her career, informing her about the opportunities Gaylord offers.
Joining clubs and speaking to members helped her get to where she is today.
“Lindsey Morrison, the former women’s gymnastic SID, came and spoke as a guest speaker. I connected with her after the meeting. She let me know of an opportunity to intern with NCAA Softball during the Women’s College World Series,” Benge said. “I credit Lindsey Morrison with getting me in the door! I really owe a lot to her.”
Grateful for the opportunities she has had, she is excited to continue pursuing her passion and gaining experience in her field. Working with the OU Athletic Communications has given Benge amazing opportunities.
“Working any football game and especially the OU-Texas game is a huge undertaking. It is all hands on deck,” Benge said. Working hard to round out her resume, she knows her experiences within Gaylord will follow her into her professional career.
Although the game didn't turn out quite like we have all hoped, it was definitely an experience that Benge will carry with her for a lifetime.
