What year did you graduate, and what was your major?
December 1991; Broadcast Journalism
What is your favorite memory from your time at Gaylord College?
Gaylord College didn’t exist then and my favorite memory was working with my fellow journalism students on news and storytelling projects.
Do you have a favorite faculty/staff member at Gaylord College?
Bob Sands
How did your career path lead you to the Oklahoma City Thunder?
It’s been an interesting path since graduation. Early on, I chose to pursue public relations as opposed to a career in the newsroom and I’ve never regretted it. Fortunately, my broadcast journalism degree prepared me well for a career in PR and regular interaction with the media. I started in the nonprofit sector doing PR for high-profile community organizations and the connections that I started building there led to other positions including working for an elected official at the state capitol and positions within the corporate sector. My experience allowed me to hone my communications skills in various sectors (nonprofit, public, and corporate) and to cultivate strong connections and a deep understanding of the community – all skills that are integral in my role with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Describe your role at the Oklahoma City Thunder.
I’m honored to serve as the director of Corporate Communications for the Thunder. In my role, I am responsible for promoting the Thunder brand, executing media and public relations for off-court business and community engagement, driving consistent corporate messaging, and developing strategic communications that align with the organization’s business objectives.
What do you consider to be the most significant moments of your career so far?
There are many! One that stands out is being part of the Vote Yes team for the very first Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) vote in Oklahoma City. Those projects fundamentally changed Oklahoma City and have been a catalyst for transformation far beyond anything I could have imagined.
How did Gaylord College prepare you for your future career?
While I can’t credit the current Gaylord College, I can say that the most important skill that I gained from the University was writing and storytelling. Those two skills have never failed me in any position that I’ve held in my career.
Are there any other organizations or projects you’re involved with outside of your full-time job that you want to highlight?
I’m an active member of the OU Black Alumni Society OKC/Norman chapter. It’s been extremely rewarding working with my fellow alumni to maintain connections and raise scholarship dollars for so many deserving students.
What advice would you give to current students aspiring to a career in mass communication?
Keep your writing skills fresh.
Take time to understand how various generations communicate and consume news. When you start your career, you won’t have the luxury of only communicating with your generation.
Connections are important, even during your college tenure. Be intentional to build strong connections as you never know how those connections will help you down the road.
Stay humble and teachable.
What do you do for fun outside of work?
I’m a huge sports fan. I regularly attend OU football games and of course, Thunder games. I also enjoy volunteering in my community, trying new restaurants, and traveling.
