The Oklahoma University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year cooperative program between the OU-TU School of Community Medicine Department of Family and Community Medicine and Advanced Orthopedics of Oklahoma. The one year fellowship contains didactic course work and clinical experiences related to prevention and treatment of non-surgical orthopedic problems and injuries.

The program is offered to qualified physicians from Family Practice, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine and the United States Military who are selectively admitted to the program. Clinical experiences include private practice sports medicine clinics, orthopedic specialty hospitals, regional medical centers, on site management of sporting events and injury clinics at two Division I universities.

The program also offers exposure to team physician responsibilities including coverage of the Los Angeles Dodgers AA baseball team, University of Tulsa, Oral Roberts University, Northeastern State University, Tulsa Athletics semi-pro soccer and a local class 6-A high school team. Fellows also have the opportunity to plan and cover mass sporting events throughout Tulsa, and the State of Oklahoma.  We have been the medical team for the Route 66 Marathon for 10 years now.

Sports Medicine Philosophy

The primary care sports medicine fellowship has a three-fold mission to provide quality instruction, to further research and scholarly inquiry, and to provide services. The University is committed to support these activities as integrated functions. Education, wellness, prevention and the promotion of physical fitness are the prominent themes of the program’s mission. Our Sports Medicine department has a cutting edge running medicine laboratory that includes gait analysis, VO2 testing and pulmonary testing.  We pride ourselves on thorough concussion testing and pre-participation physicals.  We also enjoy seeing tendinopathies, arthritic joints, non-operative fractures and other musculoskeletal issues.

Accreditation

The primary care sports medicine fellowship is fully accredited by the AGCME, the official accrediting agency for graduate medical education programs. Upon completion of the program residents are eligible to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.  We have been continuously accredited since the ACGME first recognized Primary Care Sports Medicine in 1997.
