NORMAN – The newly renovated Jan Marie and Richard J. Crawford University Club at the University of Oklahoma is the recipient of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Oklahoma 2013 Excellence in Construction Award.

“OU is very proud of the new University Club,” said OU President David L. Boren.  “It is one of the most attractive and welcoming environments in the entire state and also provides excellent food.”

The award, which was presented recently at ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards Banquet in Tulsa, recognizes innovation, quality and vision by a building team.

The renovations include hand-scraped and distressed wood-planked floors, a stone fireplace with an onyx hearth, an enlarged kitchen, stained glass light fixtures, an expanded wine bar and a private dining area.

From the timeless mission-style furniture, cozy leatherette booths and background music by Steinway, the club provides an inviting atmosphere for people to enjoy lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch and special events. The club’s walls are decorated with outstanding artwork from the collections of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, and examples of Frankoma pottery are featured in a display case near the entrance.

Manhattan Construction Co. of Oklahoma City served as the construction manager on the project and provided for the construction of the project. Merriman Associates Architects of Dallas served as the project’s architect, with OU’s Architectural and Engineering Services providing project management for the university.

Jan Marie Crawford of Denver made the gift to fund the renovation of the University Club in her name and that of her late husband, Richard J. Crawford. The Crawfords both earned graduate degrees from OU. Jan Marie Crawford was the director of Union Activities at the university in the 1960s. She led University Scandals and the first OU student trip to Russia, and was one of the first students to study Higher Education Administration at OU. Richard J. Crawford earned a doctorate from the university and later wrote the book, The Persuasive Edge. He was the first full-time in-house trial consultant hired in a law firm to advise lawyers on their legal presentations. He died in 2009.

The renovated University Club reopened in April. It is located on the second floor of Oklahoma Memorial Union. For more information, visit theuclub-ou.com.

NORMAN – A University of Oklahoma astrophysicist, Mukremin Kilic, and his team have discovered two detached, eclipsing double white dwarf binaries with orbital periods of 40 and 46 minutes, respectively. White dwarfs are the remnants of Sun-like stars, many of which are found in pairs, or binaries. However, only a handful of white dwarf binaries are known with orbital periods less than one hour in the Milky Way—a galaxy made up of two hundred billion stars—and most have been discovered by Kilic and his colleagues. Read More
