PROTECT YOURSELF FROM “SPOOFING”

The OU Police Department has received complaints of fraudulent activity associated with the department’s phone number, (405) 325-1911. The caller claims to be part of the police department and requests money and forms of identification.

Please know that a law enforcement officer or representative from a police department will never call you and ask you to send money. If someone calls you from an official number, such as the OU Police Department, asking for money, this is a scam, also called spoofing.

Spoofing is a very common type of scam carried out by cybercriminals. According to the FBI, spoofing is when a criminal “disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL—often just by changing one letter, symbol, or number—to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source.”

If you receive a call from someone who identifies themselves as an OU Police officer or other person identifying themself as being with a legitimate organization and you have questions about the authenticity that person’s identity, please hang up and call them back using a valid number found on their website. If a suspicious call comes from the OU Police Department, call back at (405) 325-1911.

More information on combating these scams can be found at:

The University of Oklahoma Police Department is a full time, state certified, police department.  We have members on duty, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  We have the same abilities, responsibilities, and duties as other law enforcement agencies.  The difference for us is that our jurisdiction is only on OU owned property and immediate surrounding areas.

Our biggest goal is to make The University of Oklahoma campus a safe place for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.  We are always looking for new ways to achieve this goal as this is our biggest priority.

We have a great working relationship with the Norman Police Department and have members of our agency on various special response teams of the Norman Police Department.

The University of Oklahoma Police Department is able to provide presentations to departments, residences, etc., concerning safety, alcohol awareness, active shooter responses, and several more.

If you have questions about the Police Department or if you need assistance with something we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.
