Stephenson Cancer Center Namesake Shares Story and Hope

Through their transformative support, Peggy and Charles Stephenson helped to make OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center a reality when it opened its doors in 2011 in Oklahoma City.

Recently, Peggy Stephenson sat down with Tulsa’s KOTV Channel 6 anchor LeAnne Taylor for an interview. Stephenson shared her personal story as a 25-year breast cancer survivor and a message of hope for northeastern Oklahomans with a cancer diagnosis.

Stephenson Cancer Center offers a first-class treatment option for people with cancer in Oklahoma. As the state's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center, Stephenson also ranks No. 1 among all cancer centers in the nation for the number of people participating in NCI-sponsored clinical trials. That means scientific breakthroughs are incorporated more readily for treatment options that may bring benefits.

Taylor, a cancer survivor herself, talked with Stephenson about her cancer experience. Stephenson continues to visit the center periodically to share hope and encouragement with patients. She wants people in Tulsa and surrounding areas to know that first-class cancer treatment is only a couple of hours away.

“I have letters in a box right now [from] people that I meet every day, and it’s wonderful [that they] say, ‘I went to the Stephenson Cancer Center and I have been helped.’ That’s the joy,” Stephenson said.
