In an effort to better articulate its purpose and to alleviate confusion arising from a similar-named fund, Sooners Helping Sooners has been rebranded as the OU Student Relief Fund. The change, effective Oct. 30, aims to reinforce its commitment to supporting all University of Oklahoma students during times of need.
David Surratt, vice president of student affairs and dean of students, emphasized the fund’s pivotal role in ensuring comprehensive support for students facing unexpected challenges.
“There are a number of situations that can arise for students at any given time,” he noted. “Through this fund, we are trying to ensure that all students feel supported at all times.”
While the program’s name has changed, its core objective remains constant: aiding students in overcoming various challenges, including natural disasters, personal property theft, family bereavement and other unexpected circumstances. The fund operates on the principle of giving, fostering a culture of compassion within the entire OU campus community.
“This rebrand reflects our organization’s commitment to providing emergency financial assistance to enrolled OU students,” said Danielle Steely, director of administration for the Division of Student Affairs and administrator for OU Student Relief Fund, Norman campus. “We are grateful for the continued support of our stakeholders, and we look forward to continuing to serve the OU community under our new name.”
During fiscal year 2023, the OU Student Relief Fund disbursed thousands of dollars to students requiring emergency funds. This financial support was instrumental in alleviating significant burdens and ensuring that students could focus on their education without undue stress.
What does the name change mean for students, supporters and stakeholders?
