College of Allied Health Unveils New X-ray, CT Equipment

The OU College of Allied Health’s Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences held a ribbon cutting ceremony last month to unveil new diagnostic X-ray and CT systems in the department’s student imaging laboratories.

The new equipment – GE Healthcare’s XR Definium Tempo Plus diagnostic X-ray system and the Optima CT520 CT system – has been installed, providing added benefit to students in the radiography, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine bachelor’s degree programs. These are the only bachelor’s degree programs offering this education in the state of Oklahoma.

Students can now practice their knowledge of physics, instrumentation, positioning, quality control and simulated patient procedures utilizing these systems throughout their two-year programmatic curriculum to enhance foundational and advanced imaging skills.

These imaging systems are the first new systems to be installed in these laboratories in the past several decades. They were purchased through the support of the University Hospitals Authority and Trust.

“As the only institution in the state that offers bachelor’s-level education in radiation sciences, this was a very important acquisition for the college and our students,” said Jane E. Wilson, dean of the College of Allied Health. “This is the type of digital equipment our students will encounter in practice and provides real-world experiences that will prepare them for patient care. We greatly appreciate the support from the University Hospitals Authority and Trust, as well as Provost Raskob, to promote the teaching excellence for our programs.”
