Juneteenth National Independence Day commemorates the day that news of the Emancipation Proclamation – President Lincoln’s order that freed all enslaved persons – reached Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.

Today, it’s a day of jubilee and a moment to focus our national attention on our shared past and move toward a place of healing together, said Dr. Karlos K. Hill, chair of the Clara Luper Department of African and African American Studies at OU.

“Juneteenth is an opportunity for us to care about each other,” Hill said.
