The OU School of Music lost a wonderful teacher, mentor, and colleague. Irv Wagner passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on September 15, 2023. Doc Wagner lived music and trombone and pursued these passions for his entire career — a true inspiration. He pioneered trombone choir and cultivated a worldwide network of alums and professional trombonists. We all have fond memories of Doc exuding kindness, building community, conducting ensembles, performing recitals, and even playing the spoons. He leaves a profound legacy as a gifted professor, renowned artist, and generous friend to all.

The memorial service for Dr. Irvin Wagner will be March 24th, 2024 at 2:30pm at the Nancy O'Brian Center for Performing Arts in Norman, OK.

Dr. Irvin Wagner is a founding member of the Oklahoma Brass Quintet, and has been named as a David Ross Boyd Professor. Wagner conducts the popular OU Trombone Choir. He is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the conductor for many of that orchestra's pops concerts. Wagner's compositions and arrangements are in demand by many major symphony orchestras and trombone choirs.
